Christ lag in Todesbanden. Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands for our offenses given. Victimae Paschali Laudes immolent Christiani. Christians to the Paschal Victim Offer your thankful praises. Christ is arisen. Christ ist erstanden! Christ is arisen From death’s painful prison. Now we rejoice with gladness, Christ will end all sadness. Kyrieleis. This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Christ our Paschal Lamb has been sacrificed. Let us celebrate the festival with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia! Therefore let us joyful be, And sing to God right thankfully Loud songs of Alleluia!
21.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Dona nobis pacem. Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us. Jesus, Lamb of God, bearer of our sins have mercy on us. Jesus Lamb of God, redeemer of the world: give us your peace. He was brought as a lamb to the slaughter: yet he opened not his mouth. He was oppressed and he was afflicted: yet he opened not his mouth. All we like sheep have gone astray: and the Lord has laid on him the sin of us all. We have turned every one to his own way: and the Lord has laid on him the sin of us all. Lamb of God, Holy. Lamb of God most Holy. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Grant us your peace. Behold the Lamb of God: the guilt of all bearing. Who takes away the sin of the world: Goes patient on, grows weak and faint, Bears shame and strife and wounds and death: To slaughter led without complaint. Willing all this he suffers. Lamb of God, pure and holy, Who on the cross did suffer. Ever patient and lowly, Thyself to scorn did offer. All sins you wore for us, Else had despair reigned o’er us: Thy peace be with us, O Jesus. Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands saying with loud voice: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom: and strength and honor and glory and blessing! And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all therein saying: Blessing and honor and glory and power be given to him who sits upon the throne: and to the Lamb forever and ever!
22.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews, from ev’ry nation, living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear each of us in his own language? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in their own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed them, “Men of Judea, and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let it be known to you, and give ear to my words: For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ’And in the last days it shall be, God declares, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh, And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; Yea, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days. I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs in the earth beneath, blood and fire and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and manifest day of the Lord comes. And it shall be, that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”
23.
O Jesus, in my heart instill such fervent love for Thee. That I can find no peace until Thy love abides in me. Then shall this present day of grace be filled with joy and peace. For Thou wilt me in love embrace and bid my sorrow cease. Call, then, the weary sinner home to Thy Jerusalem, And crown Thy friend, from darkness come, with life’s bright diadem.
24.
The Lord is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandments. Hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow.
25.
From above He hath sent fire into my bones; and it prevailed against me. He hath set a net for my feet; He hath turned me back; He hath made me desolate and faint all the day.
26.
For the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her, they have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments. They cried unto them: Depart ye! It is unclean. Touch not!
27.
Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us; consider, and behold our reproach. Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities. The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. The crown is fallen from our head; woe unto us, that we have sinned!
28.
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
29.
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
30.
I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.
31.
You shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace.
32.
Sitting upon the tiny flowers woven in the grass, she gazes through the leaves into the sunlight, listening for the rustle of words to explain the strange angel. She is rapt with love. She will say yes to all creation. She will magnify the Lord, knowing the image does not form without the Word. She will bear the Word.
33.
The Word she bears is heavy as flesh and light as hair. She breathes in the pangs of birth and out her joy, as this child, borne of a child, arrives sticky in skin and delicate of bone. Immensity in such a tiny form. She curls around him.
34.
A wedding crisis – no wine. Quickly Mary seeks repair and turns to Christ to do what he has never done before. At first reluctant, he says no, but like his mother’s smiling yes to Gabriel, He radiates obedience. The water barrels filled, he lavishes with wine the wedding feast. He pours abundance Into each guest’s cup. Mary ponders the wine of celebration, coursing like water.
35.
She feels every shard of iron nail and crossbeam splinter, every thorn. There is nothing for her to do but stand beneath the cross waiting, watching, weeping. When Christ gives John a mother, Mary a son, she does not know that this is not the end.
36.
After the rush of sorrow at the cross she startles at the here and now of him, his breathing, the blink of his eyes, the stretch of his hands, as she did when he was born. She would like to trace with her fingers each scar, each wrinkle, each lock of hair. Instead she gazes, his time fulfilled and the kingdom come.
37.
O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves: we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
38.
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
39.
Let the tender girl hold the wonder. Let the wonder sleep his infant sleep in cosmic peace, though godly thunder rolls gently distant and deep. Let this tiny king enflesh our joy Who whirled the planets, made the earth and called it good. Creator, Lord, boy, our God incarnate at birth. Let his first night pricked with polished stars mark new time exploding pent-up bounds. The brightest light the heaven unbars and moonlight shadows confounds. Let the sleeping world dream the wonder. Let the wonder dream this planet’s drift, the stories merged, not ripped asunder this world, this infant, God’s gift.
40.
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
41.
Ahead the star spreads light like a soft blanket. The darkness shoves them forward. “Where is he?” they ask, their odd robes desert dusty, their saddle bags packed firm with gifts for the child they find nuzzling Mary, who strokes his perfect head as gently as planted kisses. This infant their finish, this infant their birth.
42.
He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him,“Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
43.
Dark red fruit crushed under foot stains like blood. The branches cup Zacchaeus gently and he yearns until the host does not hold back, reaches up to pluck him down, and invites himself to dinner.
44.
And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “Arise, take up your bed and go home.” And he arose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
45.
22. Jesus Healing He was a lump of spine and clenched fists until his friends lowered the pallet, a burden light as spindles, and Jesus, who loosens muscles and warms limbs, released him from the frigid mundane into an agile walk home.
46.
Then He Arose and Rebuked the Winds and the Sea. And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
47.
Jesus Stilling After the sway and pitch of small waves, and the deep solitude of sleep, Jesus dreams whatever God dreams: new languages, Eden, the clamps and chisels of a father’s workshop, a boulder wedged into an entrance. Then the waves’ explosion, the frantic bailing, and Jesus’ rebuke. All finally like God in the wind before creation, silent and deep.
48.
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting,“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
49.
He rides the hosannas into the city, the jubilant song an invitation, his name. The path clean of stones. The cloaks spread under the neat hooves of ass and colt. No stumble. No crown of thorns. No burdened tread. He comes, a King. He comes.
50.
Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.
51.
Let the foot prints vanish in drifts as the father, the maiden, the carpenter’s child of God, press for Egypt, distancing Herod. Let the desert sands smooth the wrench of leaving home, the perilous journey from children’s cries, soothe with deep nights, the babe’s planned demise. Rachel’s children undone, stems plucked while still greening, tiny ankles, soft necks, delicate wrists, none to console, all comfort resists. Though the child’s cross awaits, let his own travels down that dusty road lie far ahead, not yet, Late snatched from sword’s blade, he’ll pay our debt.
52.
We praise Thee, O God: we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee: the Father everlasting. To Thee all Angels cry aloud: the heavens, and all the powers therein. To Thee Cherubim and Seraphim: continually do cry, Holy, holy, holy: Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty: of Thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles: praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets: praise Thee. The noble army of Martyrs: praise Thee. The holy Church throughout all the world: doth acknowledge Thee; The Father: of an infinite Majesty; Thine honorable, true: and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost: the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory: O Christ. Thou art the everlasting: Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver Man: Thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s womb. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death: Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God: in the Glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come: to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee, help thy servants: whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints: in glory everlasting. O Lord, save Thy people: and bless Thine heritage. Govern them: and lift them up for ever. Day by day: we magnify Thee; And we worship Thy name: ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord: to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us: have mercy upon us. O Lord, let Thy mercy be upon us: as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded.
